Domestic Violence Awareness Month!

Most people paint October pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness but did you know that October is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month? It's important that we bring awareness to the epidemic of domestic violence since 1 in 4 women will be a victim of domestic violence in her lifetime! Not only that but domestic violence is the number one cause of death for young African-American women and the 7th leading cause of premature death for women overall.

I have been working in the anti-violence movement for the past 8 years and it has been a rewarding yet heart-rending journey. I have the opportunity to speak up for abused women and their children, but I am also privy to horrible stories of violence. I am often in awe of the strength of survivors of domestic violence and their resilience. For so long society deemed these women as weak because of the violence they endured but that couldn't be further from the truth...they are survivors!!!

So, help me paint October purple and bring awareness to domestic violence! The next time you hear someone saying that someone "deserved" to be slapped or hit, say something! The next time someone you know discloses violence or control in their relationship, let them know they deserve better and encourage them to get help! Help is available!
