Peace: The Reward of Obedience

This past Sunday, I had the pleasure of ministering at my church. I am a fairly comfortable preaching but I am always humbled when I am afforded the opportunity to share the word of God. My topic was "Get Your Life!" and through this message I encouraged believers to take hold of their life in Christ. For many believers, we are alive but we are not living. Christ ultimately died so we could live abundantly both in this life and the the life to come.

I also mentioned in my message that many of us are not living life to our fullest potential because we aren't prioritizing the will of God. The bible instructs us in Matthew 6:33 to seek God first and everything else that we desire will be given to us. So in essence, if you put God's purpose and plan first then he will make sure that all of your goals, dreams, and aspirations are materialized as well. Sadly enough, God's will doesn't take precedence in many of our lives. Instead, we focus all of our energy and attention on success, personal ambition, and unfruitful relationships.

Romans 8:6 says, "The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace." As I studied this text, the Lord revealed to me that peace is the reward of obedience! Wow! As I taught this principle to the congregation on Sunday, I could literally see all of the "aha" moments that people were having. God promises to give us peace if we are obedient to his will for our lives. So, it's very possible that your frustration is less about your coworkers and your spouse and more about you not praying and studying God's word the way you know you should (Ouch!). I don't know about you but when I am out of alignment with God, nothing else seems to go right in my life.

According to Romans 8:6, we receive life and peace when our minds are governed by God's Spirit. Peace from God is a beautiful thing. It is what keeps you from losing your mind when everything (and everyone) in your life seems to be going haywire. Peace allows you to trust God even when you don't quite understand what he's doing in your life. We spend so much time seeking peace from external sources only to find that true peace can only come from God.

The purpose of this post is to encourage you to evaluate God's place in your life. Have you allowed the cares of life to consume you? If so, don't beat yourself up because it happens to all of us at one point or another. The awesome thing is it's never too late to set things in order and ask God for his forgiveness and guidance. God's peace is available to you today!

My prayer for you: "Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in Him so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit." (Romans 15:13)
