I am reminded of the 90's hit by Mary J. Blige entitled "Be Happy"...that was (and still is) my jam! You know those famous lyrics..."All I really want is to be happy....find a love that's right, it will be so sweet." Well, Mary J. wanted what we all want in life, happiness! The sad thing is, there aren't many people who can say that they have actually experienced authentic and long-lasting happiness.
I believe one of the main reasons why people never achieve true happiness is because they look externally for happiness rather than internally. Often times we look for happiness in money, success, and relationships rather than seeing happiness as a state of mind. What if I told you that no one could actually make you happy but that happiness was a choice? Yeah, you actually play a big part in your own happiness. How crazy is that?!?
Another reason I believe people lack true happiness is because of the idea that it's is a feeling rather than a thought process. True hapiness is not compromised because of a bad day or financial challenges. I'm not saying that happy people won't get mad or frustrated but they won't live there. There's a difference in getting mad and staying mad. If you are happy in your mind then external stressors won't be able to disrupt your inner peace. Proverbs 23:7 says it best, "For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he." Happiness starts in your mind!
Prayer: Lord, I pray for true happiness that is not predicated on what I have or don't have. I pray that you would help me to rid myself of negative thoughts and negative people. I pray that you would fill me with love, peace, and contentment. Help me to love who you created me to be. In Jesus name! Amen."
